Looking more in deepth I found out that there was a commit in the steal-legacy repository to revert from less.js 1.3.3 to 1.3.0:

This break the contacts example due to the less 1.3.0 and bootstrap.less requirements.
I hope this could be useful to other JavaScriptMVC newbie like me.
