It looks as if you are using a custom download instead of the actual AMD version that you can find in the big download or Bower component in the AMD folder. As one of the few frameworks CanJS actually allows you to load all its components individually which is exactly what RequireJS does (the download builds does a similar thing but then puts it in one file).
